Heavy duty shelving from the experts
Rapid Racking transformed the UK shelving market in the 1980s with our boltless Rapid 1 system—and we’ve been leading the way ever since. Today, businesses in every sector rely on our engineering know-how and no-nonsense approach to keep stock organised, equipment accessible and operations moving.
Not all shelves are created equal
Most industrial shelves look the same nowadays (hello blue and orange). But small differences in build quality make a huge difference on the warehouse floor. Thicker steel means stronger shelving—who knew! We did. And we make our Rapid 1 heavy duty shelving with 2mm-thick steel beams and uprights, where others stop at 1.5mm. Small numbers, big impact on stability, lifespan and performance under pressure.

We’ve got a shelf for that
Special storage conditions demand specialist shelving. Our systems can be customised by shelf type to suit the environment they’re in. Budget-friendly chipboard is a practical option for dry storage areas including archive rooms. In harsher conditions like cold rooms or damp/humid buildings, choose wire mesh for better durability and airflow, while galvanised steel panel shelving is best for hygiene-critical settings like labs and healthcare facilities.
Need something more specific? We’ve got that too. Check out our kanban storage with bin compartments and sloping shelves for easy parts picking, and our range of shelving trolleys for inventory on the move in dynamic workshops and storerooms.

Why is Rapid’s warehouse shelving better than others in the market?
It comes down to strength. Our heavy duty shelving is made with thicker steel beams and uprights, around 25% thicker.
You might not spot the difference at a glance (unless you’re deep in the spec sheets), but that extra strength shows up when it matters. Loads don’t always remain uniformly distributed—in the real world, goods are constantly being added, removed, shifted, putting shelves under uneven stress. That’s when weaker units feel the strain: beams begin to sag, uprights flex on one side… and you find yourself back on the market for a new set of shelves.
Build it stronger from the start and it’ll hold up day after day, year after year. (And you won’t need to go shelf shopping again for decades.)
What’s the difference between industrial shelving and racking?
At Rapid, the difference is in how it’s loaded.
- Shelving is for hand-loaded stock—smaller items, mixed products, picking by hand.
- Racking is for palletised goods—handled by forklifts and pallet stackers.
While racking systems handle heavier loads overall, industrial shelving still pulls serious weight. Our long span shelving for example carries over a tonne per shelf. And in awkward spaces, smaller footprints and multi-tier setups, shelving really comes into its own—flexible, accessible and easy to adapt as your operation evolves.
