Who needs an inspection?

If you have a racking system, it is your responsibility as an employer to ensure your working environment is safe. The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that British warehouses receive an annual rack inspection from a SEMA approved Rack Inspector (SARI). Failing to regularly inspect and properly maintain your racking can increase the risk of injuries and worsen existing damage, potentially leading to a catastrophic collapse. All types of racking systems require inspections. These may include:

  • Adjustable Pallet racking (APR)
  • Drive-In/Through Racking
  • Live Storage Systems
  • Push Back Racking Systems
  • Multi-Tier Storage Systems
  • Automated Racking/Shelving Systems
  • Cantilever Racking
  • Shelving Systems (excluding those manufactured from wood)

Why do you need a Rack Inspection?

An inspection is required under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, as well as to comply with BS EN 15635: Steel Static Storage Systems – Application and Maintenance of Storage Equipment. The HSE publication HSG76 Warehousing and Storage: A Guide to Health and Safety recommends inspection by an independent SARI (SEMA Approved Rack Inspector). Enforcing authorities would be looking for the last Rack Safety Inspection Report during an enforcement visit or if there has been an accident.

When do you need a Rack Inspection?

How do I know if the Inspector is approved by SEMA?

All SEMA approved rack inspectors carry a credit card sized identity card with their photograph and date of qualification expiry. These must be renewed annually subject to quality checks by SEMA. SEMA have set a very high standard with the SARI qualification. All SARI’s must have relevant experience within the racking industry, complete a training course with SEMA and pass both classroom and practical examinations to prove they are competent to carry out racking inspections to a high standard. With a SARI you can be confident you will get a high inspection standard.

What is included in your Rack Inspection?

  • Completion certificate
  • Damage report
  • Recommended next steps
  • Floor plan summary

A SARI will complete a ground-level inspection in line with SEMA guidance; other types of inspection are available if you require. On completion of the inspection, you will receive a copy of your damage report along with a site layout drawing. The damage report highlights the locations requiring attention and the risk, using the traffic light system.
