Are you using the correct shelving material for your storage?

It is important to choose the right shelving material for your storage solutions and environment because different materials have different strength and durability properties, making them suitable for specific uses and environments.

Rapid 2 is our most versatile shelving range. Not only is it compatible with an array of accessories to organise and optimise your shelving system, it’s slim beam profile, adjustability and choice of three different shelving materials – chipboard, melamine, and galvanized steel – make it suitable for any environment. That being said, one size does not fit all when it comes to choosing shelving material for your bay. For instance, some materials may corrode or rust if exposed to certain environmental factors such as humidity or water, while other materials may be unsuitable for use in sensitive environments such as clean rooms or laboratories.

If you’re unsure which material is right for you, we have outlined the best uses for chipboard, melamine, and galvanized steel shelving below!

Chipboard

Chipboard is a good material for shelving because it is strong, lightweight, and versatile. It is made of compressed wood chips and adhesive, which makes it sturdy but also economical. Chipboard is also easy to cut and shape, allowing it to be customized to fit a wide range of storage needs.

Chipboard is best suited for indoor environments that are dry and low humidity. It is not ideal for areas that are prone to moisture or water as it can warp or become weak when exposed to sustained humidity or wetness. This means that chipboard shelving is best used in areas such as archive storage, garages, offices, and retail spaces where the material can maintain its integrity. When chipboard is used in these environments, it provides a reliable and functional storage solution that can be easily adapted to meet changing needs.

Melamine

Melamine is a good material for shelving because it is strong, durable, and easy to clean. It is made by covering a core material, such as particleboard or MDF, with a resin that includes melamine. This process results in a hard plastic surface that is less likely to scratch or chip compared to other materials.

This type of shelving is best suited for indoor environments that are dry and have low to moderate humidity levels, which would suit most warehouses. Melamine can also withstand occasional exposure to moisture, making it a suitable choice for areas such as sheds and laundry rooms. However, it is not recommended for use in areas that are prone to heavy moisture or direct water exposure, such as in kitchens or areas with high humidity. This shelving material is also ideal for areas that require frequent cleaning or are prone to spills, such as offices, retail spaces, and hospitals.

Overall, melamine shelving provides a durable and reliable storage solution that is versatile enough to be used in a range of environments.

Galvanized steel

Galvanized steel is a good material for shelving because it is strong, durable, and resistant to corrosion – which is compatible for outdoor use. The steel is coated with a layer of zinc, which helps to protect it from rust and other forms of corrosion. This makes galvanized steel shelving ideal for use in environments where the shelves may be exposed to moisture, humidity, or chemicals.

As a shelving material it is best suited for industrial and commercial environments, such as warehouses, and factories. It is capable of holding heavy loads and can withstand constant use over time. Additionally, galvanized steel shelving is easy to clean and maintain, making it a practical choice for areas where cleanliness is important.

While galvanized steel shelving is not typically used in domestic environments due to its industrial appearance, it can be used in some home storage solutions. For example, it is often used as a garage or basement and cellar storage solution where a high level of durability is required.

Overall, galvanized steel shelving provides a strong and long-lasting storage solution that is well-suited for demanding environments.
